The National Development Plan (NDP) has placed skills development and the enrolment of more students at colleges and universities at the centre of its strategy.
Planning Minister Trevor Manuel said on Friday that they wanted the government to increase the number of students enrolling for colleges from 300000 to 1.25 million a year by 2030.
Responding to a written parliamentary question, he said that this was necessary to meet the country’s skills development needs.
He said the NDP had outlined a plan of action that would see the growth of students at colleges and universities in the next few years.
He also said the plan wanted to see the number of students enrolling at universities being increased from 950000 to 1.62 million. Manuel said the NDP had also set a target for the country to be able to produce 30000 artisans a year by 2030 and increase graduates from 167169 to 425000 a year.
